You really want to go here if you are interested in free SF ebooks. Tor Books, in a final "welcome to our new website" has released (for one week only) all the titles they've been releasing one week at a time for the last few months for free. With no DRM! I've been obsessively downloading them all for several months now, but you can get them all at once. Convenient!

Some titles include:
Old Man’s War by John Scalzi (LOVED it)
Spin by Robert Charles Wilson (LOVED it)
Farthing by Jo Walton (haven't read yet)
Crystal Rain by Tobias Buckell (haven't read yet)
Four and Twenty Blackbirds by Cherie Priest (LOVED it)
etc. There are TWENTY FOUR books for free over there. There's probably something to your taste. There's also a bunch of wallpaper you can snag, too (hi-res artwork from Tor publications).

The books are all available in various formats: PDF, HTML, and Mobi (ideal for Kindle!) so there's probably something you can use over there. Stock up your laptop for plane flights! Stick files on your Blackberries and Treos! And as always, if you like the stuff, go buy a copy. And buy other stuff by the same author.

I thought you'd read OMW. Isn't it great?

Yeah, I read it back in 2006 (along with Ghost Brigades). Gotta get the more recent stuff.

What is Old Man's War like? I keep picking it up in the bookshop and putting it down again, put off by the comparisons to Heinlein. I read one Heinlein that I liked - without knowing much about him - and then read Starship Troopers and found it irritating, and have been totally put off ever since.

The last book I kept picking up and putting down like that was American Gods, and I'm really glad I eventually bit the bullet and read that one - it's on the list of books that have changed my life, one way or another!

I really liked it. I don't know if it would change your life, but it's certainly an enjoyable read. It's fairly straightforward space opera, but with an enjoyable protagonist and a really interesting universe. I blogged it (http://greenstreetbks.livejournal.com/24654.html) and its sequel (http://greenstreetbks.livejournal.com/25013.html). I haven't read the additional novels in the series (Scalzi's an energizer bunny, cranking out the stuff) but I've liked these two.

Download it, read a couple chapters on your computer, see if you like it!

Well, I don't expect them ALL to change my life; it was just intended to demonstrate that my skills at judging books by their covers (or indeed first few pages) are sadly lacking.

I will download it.
