Things I pay for online
Dec. 23rd, 2008 10:19 amScalzi posted a list of all the subscriptions he pays for online, and to me it looks a little extravagant. Here's my list:
Things Scalzi mentioned that I use but don't pay for:
Things I've considered paying for:
Is there anything you pay for online that you consider totally worthwhile?
- Flickr pro account ($25 per year? something like that)
- Netflix including online access ($17 per month)
- Librarything lifetime membership (I think it was $20; that's the kind of fee I'm willing to pay)
- My domain and hosting (I paid for 2 years in advance, I think. $6 per month?)
Things Scalzi mentioned that I use but don't pay for:
- Livejournal x2
- Newspapers (NY Times, Boston Globe, others)
- Encyclopedias (while I was teaching, I had full access to the Simmons system which had every academic source you could think of; now I use the BPL and my local library network online when I need a reasonably vetted resource. Mostly I use wikipedia, tho)
- Streaming music (various places)
Things I've considered paying for:
- Metafilter account: ($5, I think lifetime? I should just do that)
- Wikipedia donation drives

Date: 2008-12-23 06:24 pm (UTC)It's not totally unreasonable that I should pay for LJ, since it gives me so much pleasure, but I never have. I'm SLIGHTLY kicking myself that I managed to miss the Permanent Account sale on here, despite knowing when it was going to be. I would rather pay a single bigger fee than lots of smaller ones, but it was enough money that I had serious pause, since I can do all the important things for free and I don't suppose anyone cares that I only have six userpics. (If you could buy userpic add-ons with a Basic Account, I totally would.)
Every so often I consider paying for Flickr and then don't. If I could lifetime-member that, maybe I would.
