Woe!

Today I went to the dentist (my hygienist likes to see me every three months) and was told that my one tiny troubled gum area now has advanced to needing a root canal!

I am horrified! I've never had serious issues with my teeth, ever! Ever! And now they want to kill one of my teeth for good. I am practically in mourning, I swear! It's not the procedure — I am no wimp, especially not at the dentist. It's the end result! And it feels wrong. I currently have no pain, the tooth looks good, it's just the gum on one side of one tooth is puffy, and root canal seems wrong. Wrong! I have the procedure scheduled for Saturday, but I'm going to call around tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment to get a second opinion.

Root canal!

I've never heard of a root canal for a gum issue. Usually they do debrieding or the like. And so fast with the appointment!

I've been through a couple of root canals, and the only one that hurt was the one the dentist who didn't believe I needed more novacaine. Otherwise, it's just a lot of bouncy grinding. Afterwards, though, you'll need some good drugs.

I know exactly how you feel... I hate the thought of anyone doing anything irreversible to my teeth. I have two fillings (wisdom teeth that came in with defective enamel) and it wasn't the thought of the injections and drilling and so forth that threw me, it was the thought of having alien matter in my mouth...

Good luck with the second opinion. If the second opinion is the same, it should at least reassure you that this is really necessary...

I got used to the fillings eventually.
