I've finally posted another batch of photos from my trip last summer. This batch is from New Mexico to Arizona, with a bunch of pictures from the Painted Desert. Here's a set from there:

Those are gorgeous! I've never seen that part of the country.

Yeah, it's totally stunning! You must get there at some point. I'll be posting the Grand Canyon pix next; it was so mind-blowing. Of course the pictures don't do it justice. There's something about the silence and the wide-openness that was so alien, but so cool.

What's really amazing about that part of the country is how, after a little rainstorm, instantly the whole landscape is yellow and purple with flowers. And bugs. Lots and lots of bugs. No idea where they came from, but they appear in a matter of hours and last a day or two and then it's all gone again.

Big fat bugs too. We were driving down the highway a few days after a brief rain, and in a very short amount of time the windshield looked like a Jackson Pollack painting.

I really wish I had been able to take this more in the spirit of a vacation than in the spirit of moving to my IMPENDING DOOM. It was a gorgeous trip, and this part of it was terrific. I have yet to upload just about anything, but your pics are much better than mine.

Maybe in a couple of years, we can take a month's sabbatical and go on a real cross-country trip that includes a real stop everywhere we want. (And four-star accomodations along the way!)

I was ok with the Comfort Inns. I just want to spend more time in these places. Maybe just fly to AZ and rent a car there, spend a full two weeks there. The desert kicks ass.

I also love the desert. There's something about plants that can just grow out of rocks. Not to mention rainbow-colored dirt. And I do like the multi-colored scrub acne.

Patrick, it's hard for the driver to take good pictures!

I once flew to Albuquerque and drove around northwestern New Mexico until I had to go to a conference. It has the same general look(s) about it. I do highly recommend that plan. Also, the area around Arches National Park in Utah is fabulous.

Camping out. I think I've heard of that. Something to do with tents, right? And no showers or toilets. I think not.
