I tempt Fate...and lose!

I was chatting with my coworkers yesterday about the rain, the incessant horrible rain, and I was telling them about my experiences with flooding. My last apartment was a "garden" apartment (read: basement) and was in a very low part of my city. Two years ago we had days and days of torrential downpours and the water table just kept rising. Finally one night the water just started seeping up through my floor and got to about 3 inches deep all over my apartment (thanks to no small effort by my landlord and our sump pumps).
I had to move out for two weeks while they tore up the floor and put in a french drain, and every time it rained afterward I got nervous.
So now I live on the first floor, in a house on a small hill, and I am less concerned with flooding. Our basement is used as most basements are -- for laundry, our furnace, and storage. Lots and lots and lots of Mom's crap stored down there. Lots. Emphasis on "crap." I joked to my coworkers that I'd almost welcome a flood, since then we would be forced to throw out all the crap down there.
You see where this is going, right?
Last night I noticed a small trickle down the middle of the floor. I decided there was nothing we could do about it anyway, so I went to bed. I stayed in bed extra long today, procrastinating. Finally I looked. 2 inches of water in most places, a couple of small oases of dryness...mostly, not so good. We called the landlords, they told us they'd seen the small trickle last night but assumed that would be the worst of it. Our landlord is off now borrowing a pump from a relative to try to remove some of it.
I know a lot of Mom's stuff is in plastic bags and plastic boxes, but I know there's a lot of stuff just in cardboard. Some good times ahead!
Why do I tempt Fate? Why?

Date: 2006-05-15 01:15 am (UTC)I have a new resolution, though -- when I finally buy a house, nothing will get stored in my basement. Nothing. And I'm thinking I might just need to live on a steep hill. At the top.
This stuff always happens on my days off -- mom breaking herself, vet visits, and now flooding! I think I need a third job to keep myself busy every day, so we can catch a break from mini-disasters!
