So in the last week+ I've: gone to my aunt's place, set up and installed her new computer, including wrangling cables under the desk (my poor knees), bringing home the old PC, and then supplying her with remote tech support all week while she got used to the new operating system. And then provided more remote tech support after she somehow managed to trigger a full system restore, which basically negated everything I did. I also researched, bought, took delivery on, installed, and have been glorying in a new document scanner (sheet fed)(awesome). I upgraded my iphone to the new operating system with success and now have neat new things on it. I did manual backups on my desktop. I'm about to take apart my aunt's old computer so I can take the hard drive out and stick it in an external enclosure so I can move her files onto her new computer. I am also going to install something like logmein on her new computer so I can access it remotely and run backups and the like. This will entail at least one more trip down there, but it's only about an hour's drive, so that's no problem. She's 84, is still sharp as a tack, and she's still willing to try new things, so I find that fun. Plus last week she took me out to lunch, so hey! Free food.

I feel pretty productive. I am especially delighted with the scanner. DAMN, it's fast. I've already managed to get three of my bins of paper examined, and two of them are already in recycling. Now that the scanner has arrived, I am hoping to have all 12 ready for recycling within a few weeks. My god, will that feel great. My goal for this project is to only allow paper to exist in my two-drawer filing cabinet, and nowhere else. I'm ok with keeping that much. I started doing the scanning thing last year when I did all my old bank statements and paystubs and things like that. Now I'm into the nitty gritty of my past, 47 years of accumulated paper cruft. Having the ability to put a stack of paper in one end and have a pdf file come out the other end in less than a minute? AWESOME. It was a little pricey for someone who is trying to be frugal, but with any luck I can talk Mom into letting me do her files, too, which might solve the other major problem in my life. If I manage that? It'll be worth every penny. At twice the price!

So I anticipate that's all I'll be doing for a while. Trawling through my past: movie stubs, playbills, letters, cards, business stuff, school things, teaching things, etc. I already found an exercise tracking thing from "Women's World" from 1982. In 1982 I weighed 90 pounds less than I do right now; it was my senior year of high school, and I remember I went to the gym with my across-the-street neighbor. Oddly, we are facebook friends and both use loseit! right now, and are loseit! buddies. 30 years later, same problem, same people. Weird!

I found some scary junior high school pictures, too. My new scanner might eat them (it's really just for paper) otherwise I'd probably have them posted somewhere already. SUCH 70s hair! Oy! I do plan on posting a lot of the amusing stuff I find. Maybe I'll finally set up my domain again with a personal timeline of some kind.
