[insert lengthy post about the horrors of moving here]
So that's what's up with me. You?
I guess I could be a LITTLE more specific. Saturday my friends met me at my storage unit and we started loading the rental truck. We managed to get about 2/3 of the stuff from the unit into the truck in a couple hours, so then we headed to the new place.
I rented from Ryder, and apparently all Ryder trucks have electric lifts instead of ramps. To run the lift, however, you have to run the truck engine, and I thought that might be a little annoying for my new neighbors. Instead, we had
zanzjan in the truck, feeding the rest of us boxes.
I really shouldn't say "us". I was a total waste of flesh, for at least 2/3 of the day. Since the beginning of July my left leg has been acting up -- pain, stiffness, weakness. To such an extent that I even went to the *gasp* doctor about it, although that went nowhere (the classic "if it's still like this in a few weeks, call me back"). I didn't injure it, and my doctor said it wasn't a blood clot or anything scary, so really, WTF? Ironically, it's my GOOD leg, the one I *didn't* have surgery on. I'm starting to think it's sciatica. I've been treating it for the last week with ibuprofen and cold packs, and that gives me some relief. So anyway, I say this because it really slowed me down and made me pathetic. If I didn't have awesome friends, I'd still be standing next to the truck right now. Weeping, I'm sure.
They unloaded everything in record time, and even distributed some things to other floors (I'm moving into a duplex, and there's a finished basement, so there are three possibilities for levels, now!). HOWEVER. There is now a MOUNTAIN of stuff in the living room. I mean, basically the whole room STUFFED TO THE CEILING with boxes. And all of it stuff I haven't seen in four + years. Daunting! And my new roommate is arriving from Texas in about three days, with all of HIS stuff.
...AND...
That's not even all my stuff. I have the third that's left in storage, and the stuff I've actually been living with at Mom's, including my bed, desk, loveseat, large-ish tv, filing cabinet, clothes, and random effluvia.
So that was yesterday. Today I managed to sleep in (for the first time in about a month, actually! and yes, still sleeping at Mom's for the next day or two), and then I packed a few things into the car and headed over. MOUNTAIN of stuff! Cable guy coming tomorrow. Need to get to the cable! So of course I started in the kitchen. Loaded stuff into the dishwasher, etc. Tightened up the hinge on the fridge. Did some shopping for supplies. Moved around some stuff, put bookcases where they're going to live, hunted fruitlessly for the cushion for the big chair, random stuff. Sat down a lot, whimpering. Was happy I plugged my iPod into some speakers. Managed to empty about 10 boxes. Considering how many are left, not that impressive! But found the cable, plugged in small tv, ran four loads of dishes (tiny dishwasher), put many things away, washed many other things. Came back home, fed mother and self, loaded car with more stuff, have to be up early to meet cable guy (window: 8am to noon. Bastards).
So. Sore. I. Want. To. Die.
And not even close to being finished (hell, STARTED). There are 50 boxes of books still lurking in storage. And other stuff. Um. YAY!
I need to get serious about this purge thing. NEVER AGAIN!
So. How are you??

Date: 2009-08-03 04:21 am (UTC)And hey, freecycle is your friend. I've discovered as I unpack the occasional box from the garage that after umpteen years, I'm less attached to things than I used to be.
