What are black raspberries? The same as what the English call blackberries? Is that word not used in America? And if so, why are those gadgets which are in the news at the moment because of some sort of copyright hoo-hah called BlackBerries?

(In Scotland those fruit are called brambles. Which the English boyfriend says makes it sound as if we're eating thorny twigs. End of semantic wiffling. )

BRAMBLES?! That does sound as if you're eating thorny twigs. You Scots are a hardy lot!

Black raspberries are similar to red raspberries (only, you know, black); they leave their core behind when you pick them. Blackberries keep their core intact (making them a better source of fiber, apparently). It also means that black raspberries are squishy and messy, just like red ones, and blackberries are easier to transport. And there are taste differences, too.
