I need to make some progress on things. One of those things is my obsessive list-keeping, so here's the movie part. Movies watched either in the theater, from Redbox on DVD, from Amazon Prime on streaming, or on HBO. January and February I'm not certain of the source, because I am too lazy to look that far back. I don't count movies that air on regular cable or that I just watch part of, or that I've seen a million times. I don't think I used Netflix much this year. I wish Redbox and Amazon Prime showed viewing history. Redbox does, but it only goes back 45 days, not all time. Amazon Prime only shows what you bought or rented, not what you viewed for "free".

...I think that works out to 95? 15 in the theater. Redbox costs $1.20 or $1.50 for Blu-ray plus tax each, so I spent about a hundred there. Which is amusing, since I spent way more than that on the 14 in the theater! I did do a bunch of matinees in the spring, so I saved a little. There will probably be a few more in the theater before the first. I hope.
My favorites: Beasts of the Southern Wild, Mud, Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, Pacific Rim, Stoker, Warm Bodies. Second tier: Bourne, Looper, Ted, Seven Psychopaths, The Descendants, Oblivion, Hansel and Gretel, Elysium, Gravity, World War Z, Hunger Games 2, The Hobbit 2.
WORST EVER: Alex Cross/Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning/Force of Execution. Honestly, it's a three-way tie. Alex Cross was just unspeakably bad, why is Tyler Perry allowed to make movies? Universal Soldier is incomprehensible mush. And Force of Execution? So bad. No one to root for, no one does what people would do in those situations, ridiculous waste of Danny Trejo. Ugh.
Special mention for sucking: pretty much everything John Cusack did lately (The Raven, The Numbers Station, The Factory, and The Frozen Ground). They weren't TERRIBLE, but lord, they weren't good. The Raven was the best of them, but someone must have told him "less, John, less!". Talk about understated: he was barely awake in any of these.

Date: 2013-12-28 10:37 pm (UTC)I got to see "Warm Bodies" at a slumber party. With subtitles--the perfect way to see it.
My favorite new movies were:
* "Fast and Furious 6" - crazy fun
* "Much Ado About Nothing" - especially where Benedic is doing push-ups and yoga to impress Beatrice
I also enjoyed the acting choices for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "Ender's Game," plus the fight-room scenes in "Ender's Game" (even though of course they couldn't get all the cool parts from the books in) (actually it's been too long since I read the second Hunger Games book for me to even remember it). I was wondering if I would be crying throughout the entire Hunger Games movie after the first ten minutes, but no.
The best surprise (besides "Fast and Furious 6") was "Iron Man 3." I didn't really like the other two "Iron Man" movies, but I found this one to be fun, especially the part with the kid asking questions during "The Mechanic"'s anxiety attack. I also liked the Mom of one of the dead guys--I would never have guessed what Tony Stark's head gesture meant (even though I did get "The early bird catches the worm. But the second mouse gets the cheese."). And I enjoyed the conversations between Pepper and his old conquest. And what's-his-name's role as a bad guy. Interestingly, I thought Guy Pearce was Val Kilmer through the whole movie until I read the credits.
My favorite old movie I saw for the first time was "Cold War Killers" (1983) with Terrance Stamp. DVD quality is poor, but at least it's available now. (There are two sequels, too, and they're fun, too, but they're not as good.)
Also, I read _The Lightning Thief_ this year on the recommendation of my sister. It has all the things I hate about fantasy--things seem to happen at random and there's no way to guess the right thing to do next. I still don't know what the addictive building in Las Vegas was all about. But the writing style was so good it would be fun to read aloud. I can't tell if it would be more fun if you already know about the Greek gods or if reading these books would actually be the most fun way to learn about them.

I took a few of those out at Redbox (This Is the End(? Or maybe The World's End, I can't remember!) and The Heat), but ran out of time/enthusiasm. I will have to finish up!
I really liked Much Ado, but I adored the Emma Thompson/Kenneth Branagh version, so I can't be unfaithful.

Date: 2013-12-29 08:51 pm (UTC)I found "The World's End" disappointing, but then "Hot Fuzz" is one of my favorite movies. But I'm not a big fan of their zombie movie (I loved the preview that basically just had my favorite scene in it where he goes through his whole morning routine without even noticing the zombie invasion, but the rest of the movie wasn't as fun), so your mileage may vary.
I also love the Thomspon/Branagh version of "Much Ado", but there's room in my heart (and on my shelf) for both. In fact whenever I see that play being performed, I like to see how they do it.
