JANUARY
Not much finished this month. Too stressed and busy!
1. The Last Kind Words, Tom Piccirilli, Crime. This book starts with a cutesy gimmick, but you quickly forget it and get engrossed in the excellent writing and plotting. Terry Rand grew up in a family of thieves and grifters. After his brother Collie goes crazy and kills a bunch of random strangers in one night, Terry goes AWOL, trying to rebuild his life and run away from the feeling that he might go crazy himself. He gets a call asking him to come back and talk to his brother in prison, a few weeks before his execution, and he decides that he has to come back for his brother. His brother tells him that he didn't kill one of the people he was convicted for, and he thinks that whoever actually killed her is still killing. He wants Terry to figure it out and stop further deaths.
Terry (short for Terrier) reconnects with his family (his grandfather Shepherd, uncles Malamute and Greyhound, sister Airedale, and father Pinscher), and attempts to figure out if what his brother told him could be true. Very noir, and the family history and backstory is gritty and good.
2. Standing in Another Man's Grave, Ian Rankin, Crime. So glad Rebus is back. I really don't understand why Rebus and Harry Bosch aren't best buds (except they don't like the same music at all and live on different continents), but they're both cops, retired or semi-, and still working cases, and still loners and irascible and great at their jobs. I think the crossover novel is way overdue. Maybe Rankin and Connelly can't play nicely together? Still, I think it would be fascinating.
Here Rebus is retired, although applying to come back under new retirement age rules. He's working as a civilian in a cold case unit and finds a very old MisPer case that could possibly lead to an active serial killer. He teams up with Siobhan Clarke, his pal from before retirement, and heads to northern Scotland. Good stuff!
