OCTOBER
42. Case Histories, Kate Atkinson (audio), Crime. I don't have a proper link to the version I actually listened to, which was from a few years ago, read by Jason Isaacs. I watched the Masterpiece Mystery version starring Jason Isaacs, also. A cozy British mystery. Jackson Brodie is a former cop turned private eye, and gets a few cold cases that he's asked to solve. Many characters, many threads; tv version resolves them all, book version leaves a few hanging.

43. Phantom, Jo Nesbo, Crime. Another Harry Hole book. I love these. Dark and grim and set in Norway. And at the end of this one, Harry gets shot and seemingly dies. I doubt it, because hey -- it's a series! Still, good stuff.

44. Tomatoland, Barry Estabrook, Non-Fic. Investigative journalism on the history of the tomato and the tomato growing industry. Fascinating! Some horrible stuff here. Present-day slavery, theft, callous disregard of human rights, poisons, thuggery: these all contribute to the tasteless supermarket tomato that is primarily grown in Florida. Dear god, I never want to eat another non-native tomato again. But they're impossible to avoid. Every restaurant, fast food joint, catered meal, whatever! A lot of the canned tomato product (for sauces, etc.) is grown in California, and is a little better. But any "slicing" tomato that you get after the local growing season is pretty much vile.

The most fascinating part was about how they managed to create a tomato that is uniform in size, perfectly shaped, could be picked while green, shipped across the country, subjected to gasses which makes them red, but that is basically flavorless. They didn't prioritize flavor, so only in the last ten years have scientists started to identify what makes a tomato taste good (and it's super complicated) and therefore have started trying to breed tomatoes that can have the other features but also flavor. There's hope!

There's also hope on the agricultural workers front. Loads of lawsuits and groups supporting workers rights. Overall, awesome read.
