I don't think it's easier to run on treadmills than in the real world. It all makes me pant, and treadmills are just so boring. But I guess they are softer under foot than concrete. Tracks are also softer, but also boring. At least on treadmills you don't have to count if you want to know how far you went.
I walk to and from the bus every day to go to work, plus I don't hate walking or climbing stairs, so I figured I took an above-average number of steps each day for an American. Nevertheless, my pedometer explained to me that I took only about 6500 steps per workday. By adding pacing at the bus stop and a walk during lunch, I got it to 8,000 - 9,000 steps. Disney World was crazy, maybe 30,000 steps a day? Weekends are crazy the other way. Generally at or below 2,000 steps, sometimes below 500.
I once heard that when people went from having just one telephone in the house to having multiple phones, they actually ended up doing a measurable amount less exercise.
