JUNE
26. Freedomâ„¢, Daniel Suarez (audio), SF/Thriller: Book 2 of previous. Now the grand experiment begins. Does it work? Can our intrepid band of heroes and misfits save the world? Is the world worth saving? Far fewer game scenes, but still some. One takeaway: I would like to be part of a world where I could just look at someone and get a popup that tells me who they are and what they do. Save a lot of guesswork. And the ability to leave instant feedback? Yeah, that would rule.

27. The Book of Man, Barry Graham, LitFic: Main character is a destitute writer who breaks away from his self-destructive pack of friends, then comes back when one of them dies. Very writerly and very Scottish, so everyone is massively drunk, stoned, or wrecked in some other way all the time. Kind of Irvine Welsh-ian without the trippy down-the-toilet scenes and with fewer uses of the sobriquet "cunt".

28. The Tin Roof Blowdown, James Lee Burke (audio), Crime: After Katrina and Rita, what happened in New Orleans? Murders, disappearances, looting, pillaging; Dave Robicheaux has a lot of stuff to deal with. And he's come a long way personally from the Dave Robicheaux of the first book.

29. Crusader's Cross, James Lee Burke (audio), Crime: I am reading these totally out of order, which cuts down on the suspense a little (will Dave keep his job? Well, he still has it three books from now, so I'd say yeah!), but it really doesn't matter. Burke has a way with the descriptors, and Will Patton's southern drawl is just magical to listen to. I am going to run out of these at some point and I'm going to be seriously sad. I guess I'll just listen to them all again.

OK, so I've officially listened to more than I've read this month. I think that's a first. I'm going to blame it on several long car trips and even more walking. I'm partway thru a couple of books (2312, KSR; and The Preacher, Lackberg) so maybe this month will flip. Maybe!

Added links and loose categories this month. Sometimes I think I only read SF and Crime. Yep, mostly! I use "Thriller" where I mean "fat mass-market paperback semi-dreck" and don't want to include it in one genre or another.

I think the audio vs. reading ratio is perfect for you right now, given that, when you listen to audio books, you're also exercising.

"Very writerly and very Scottish, so everyone is massively drunk, stoned, or wrecked in some other way all the time." So you're saying it's like an Iain Banks book, then?
