Spent Wed and Thu home sick. It wasn't as exciting as you might think. I mostly lazed about. I did some laundry, because isn't that what one does when one is home sick? And I messed around more with some files. Progress? Of a sort. I could bore you to actual tears discussing my new discovery in Note Tab Pro — outlines! But I will refrain. Let's just assume I am STOKED.

Worked today, ate Chinese food for dinner with B and then leftovers with P, ate some delicious girl scout cookies, watched a sad 20/20 about the lovely James Kim and his equally lovely family (I remember following the search and rescue when it was happening. I knew who he was because he was on the old Tech TV, and then moved over to CNET. He was sweetly geeky and excited about tech stuff, most notably cameras. I was so sad when he was found dead). And that's my day.

I know the days can't all be interesting, but man, I am not an exciting chick in the winter, am I? Yeesh.

Inquiring minds want to know--what are outlines awesome for?

Wow, you want to know? Ok! So I use Note Tab Pro to basically keep all of my short ideas/todo lists/informative things that i need to remember/etc. I like to use text files because I don't need the bloat or future incompatibility issues that a Word file might cause, and I don't need a whole database kind of thing like Evernote, because what I am doing doesn't require attachments.

And Note Tab is kinda awesome because it remembers what files were open when you shut down the program. On my work laptop I keep tabs open with different documents to do with work -- reminders of where files are stored, tricks we use for different things, ideas for training development topics. And they all open each time I launch Note Tab in little tabs, going across the top of my application. Fine. Except there's only so much space running across the top of the application, right? So then there's scrolling left and right. I don't want to close some of the files, because it's very handy to have them RIGHT THERE if I need to add something. It removes that mental barrier. If I had to open the file, I might not do it and then might not actually edit it. I use Note Tab as a one touch launching of my organizational system.

So! It works great, except for the running out of real estate problem. And here comes the wonderful OUTLINE! Instead of separate files, I can use the outline feature. It works as you might think, an outline with headers that you can click on and will take you to different parts of the document. The outline lets me have one document instead of 10 (there's no actual limit that I'm aware of, btw, 10 is an arbitrary number), leaving me the ability to have, say, five outlines open with 10 sections in them, 50 topics, accessible with a simple click. Within each outline you'd see the headers in a pane down the left side, with the text in the right pane. AWESOME.

So yeah. That was a lot more answer than you probably wanted. But I am on a mission to actually access the information I collect, and this promises to be a big freaking help!

And because I am an obsessive, I feel compelled to note that I have the program installed on all my computers, and I have different files open on each one. They all are saved in my dropbox folder, so they sync automatically, meaning wherever I update something it syncs across the board and I have the latest version when I launch the app.

OK, I think I'm done now. Maybe!

What's wrong with you, you don't need bloat?

I also love having multiple windows open. For work stuff, I have to use MS Bloat so that I can share things in the intranet. At home I don't think I use that sort of document, but I'm going to keep my eye open. Because remembering the tabs? Plus you don't even need them in too many tabs? And syncing? That works? I agree, sounds awesome!
