This weekend I got to visit Stephen and Val at their rental on the Cape. I got there around 2pm on Sunday, and since it was a little cold and cloudy out we stayed in and watched the Sox game and started on our now-traditional jigsaw puzzle.

Picked up some breakfast food and snacks at Far Land (I love that place — it's got this funky Amherst vibe to it, and the food is just awesome), and did some kitschy shopping at the local knicknack and beachwear shop, then went out for a fairly early dinner at Fanizzi's. Fanizzi's is located literally over the water, so the view is just amazing. Going early is good — not only do you get the early bird special (and get to preview what it's like to be 90 years old), but you get to watch the water. Came back to chat, eat snacks, and work some more on the puzzle. Low key, but very relaxing and lots of fun.

Yesterday the weather was a lot better. Windy and low to mid 60s, but really sunny. After breakfast we hung out reading, doing more puzzle stuff, etc. Headed into Provincetown for lunch at Bubala's (next to, but not over, the water), then wandered around town some; it's off-season, still, for Provincetown, so there weren't many people. Very relaxing to walk around and not have to elbow everyone out of your way. The shopkeepers were all very eager to help us, too, and not burnt out by the summer crowds yet.

Nice Day

Got some awesome cookies. Back to the condo so we could sit on the beach and read. V&S went out for sandwiches for dinner, but I decided I'd eat a little later, so I stayed behind and worked on the puzzle a little more. Puzzles are a little addictive for obsessives like me.

Later that night we headed to the Wellfleet Drive-In for a double feature of Night at the Museum 2 and Terminator 4 (who dreamed up THAT combo?). I had dinner at the snack bar near there, hamburger and fries and a milkshake, because hey, I'm going to a DRIVE-IN and I WILL HAVE THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE, THANKS!

Val and I swapped positions for the two movies; she took the front seat for Night at the Museum, and I took the front for Terminator (Steve, the driver, got the front for both) and she got the better end of the deal, definitely. Terminator was really pretty bad, but honestly the movie doesn't matter so much when you go to the drive-in. Really it's about the faux 50s nostalgia.

Home kind of late, so I slept in a little. My room was on the ground floor, with a slider out to the ocean. I kept it ajar all night so I could hear the waves and smell the ocean air. So awesome.

My View

After breakfast Val and I (with some small assistance by Steve) finally finished the puzzle. We had thought that we were missing a piece, DRAMA, but Val found it under the couch. Talk about unsettling! Get all the way to the end and not get to finish? Oy!

Later we got some takeout sandwiches for lunch, brought 'em back to the condo, then I packed up and headed home.

So, basically, everything was awesome. And it was kind of a timeless vacation: watching baseball, sitting on the beach, going to a drive-in, doing a jigsaw puzzle. Perfect! Going to the Cape always makes me wish I had a seaside cottage, so I could listen to the crashing waves all year round. But alas! I get to listen to cars and lawnmowers and the occasional ambulance. Except for a couple of magical days.
