I meant to post these a while ago, but I've been so busy I forgot. I took pictures of my old bed before I got rid of it, so I wouldn't forget the horror:

So here's the old mattress and box spring. I used to keep a 2" foam pad on top, which is how I didn't actually injure myself sleeping on it. Some of the reasons I needed the foam pad (yes, those are all springs):

Ow!

And even more dramatically:

Yeesh!

And what the whole thing looked like (note the serious sags and valleys):

So that was pretty torturous. But now I have the new shiny! And today I managed to get the new quilt and bed skirt washed at the same time, and this week I put the new nightstand together. Looks decent!

And feels SO GOOD.

Yay!

It's so much taller. Check out the books on the shelf on the old picture versus the new. Or where the electrical outlet is. Tall!  But so comfy.  The brown thing at the head of the bed is Sam's bed. He hates to be anywhere that isn't near my face, so I stuck his bed there and he's ridiculously happy now.

Anyway, it's making me happy every single night. I get restful sleep! Go figure.

How pretty! I love the quilt. With the bookshelves, your room looks like the perfect librarian den.

Yeah, I love the quilt too, even though it's a little country cute. I was pleased that it went so well with the curtains my aunt bought for me a couple years ago, the little throw rug I already had, and my very favorite pumpkin colored sheets and pillowcases. And of course with Richard!

Is this some kind of grownup milestone? When things kinda match? Hmm.

Wonderful quilt, and I thoroughly approve of the number of books within arm's-length of the bed...

We have no (NO!) bookcases in the bedroom, but we bought a bed with a built-in shelf on the headboard so I can put my current reading-matter there.

A new bed is totally worth the money. And I really like that quilt, too!

Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's time to replace the mattress. Sometimes not.

I also think it looks beautiful and comfortable. Calming, soothing, yet interesting. I could spend months in there!

It's a bummer to lose easy access to an extra shelf, but then the new height makes the outlet less noticable. Also, you can develop your leg muscles with that pole vaulting you have to do to get into the bed. I can't find your pole, though. Oh, it's probably hidden behind the curtain.

I remember the first time I noticed matchiness in my place. I had found a huge piece of fabric I liked and used part of it in a quilt which I hung in my dining room. Later I traded someone my small ugly table that fit in his place for his large stained wooden table which I refinished. I used part of the aforementioned fabric to re-cover the chairs. There was enough left to use as a tablecloth. And it all coordinated just fine with the wallpaper, paint and carpeting in there. The the dining room felt somehow creepy, so I started storing my bicycle in there, just to make it seem like a real person's house!

(Now I don't mind if part of my house is beautiful. I now know, even subconsciously, that things can be both beautiful and user-friendly.)

So what are you trying to say? :-)

Yeah, the shelf thing is kind of disturbing, but since the books are mostly Mom's I don't mind limiting access to them. And now I have the nightstand, so the stuff I'm reading can hang out in/on there.

The only thing I don't like about my current setup is that I have to have the bed shoved up against the bookcases. Elsewhere in the room I have my desk, filing cabinet and DVD storage, which I've previously documented, plus four bureaus, a loveseat, a side table, a floor lamp, a television stand and electronics, an ottoman, a rocking chair, two more bookcases, a large number of shelving things that hold linens, and a big stack of boxes that contain all my papers (I'm still working on those, alas). So while it's a big room, it's holding a LOT of stuff and of course that limits where things can fit. Plus two windows and a closet and an entry door. Everything has to be very carefully measured before it comes in. For example, getting the queen bed to replace the full took up just a bit more space, so I had to lose a bookcase I had where the nightstand now is. I also replaced a larger cat scratching post with a smaller one.

Soon the boxes will be gone and I can take a picture of the whole thing. I often live in spaces too small for what I try to fit in there. I used to love to play Tetris, and really in this room it shows. Layers upon layers! Very user-friendly, not particularly beautiful.

Thanks! I don't regret one dime. Should have done it a few years ago, procrastinated!

Some day I dream of living a life where I have so very much space that I don't have to have books that might topple onto my head in the middle of the night. I want a bedroom that consists of The Bed. Maybe a chair. That's IT.

Alas, I come from a long line of packrats, and every one of them was a bibliophile too. Damned genetics. The books you see here are mostly Dad's -- well, Mom's now since Dad is gone. But he collected them all. A few are mine, or ones he found for me. Mostly my books all still live in storage...

Yes, scary springs. The foam padding was lovely though. I suppose there's nothing stopping me from adding foam padding to this bed. Although another 2 inches of height might make the atmosphere a little rarefied. And since there's already two different layers of springs PLUS a four inch pillowtop something, I probably don't actually need the foam.
