I love, love, love your anticipation strategy for the "no Christmas this year" declaration. It's so nice to know people well enough that things quit being so surprising after a while.
For example, there are certain people who, when I am supposed to meet up with them, I try to make sure it's at a place where waiting a while for a late person wouldn't be bad, like at my house or at a non-crowded fast-food place to which I bring a book.
