fragile mental state alert!
Jul. 8th, 2008 10:06 pmDate illness began: June 21, 2008
Date saw doctor: June 24, 2008 (gave steroid shot, prescribed codeine)
Date spoke to doc on phone: July 2, 2008 (prescribed new cortico-steroid inhaler, FloVent)
Current date: July 8, 2008
Current status: Still fucking sick. 18 fucking days.
When I read the info with the new inhaler it said that it could take up to a week to work. And, sure enough, six days later it has started to work. My chest finally doesn't feel solid. I'm still congested, but it's got a lightness to it, an impermanence. I hope I am not kidding myself and that there actually is a light at the end of this particularly annoying tunnel.
My sleeping still sucks. I feel like a parent of a newborn. I still don't sleep more than an hour and a half or so at a stretch. I even started writing down the times I wake up (because hey, I'm up anyway) and what I do during that time (kick cat, drink water, straighten sheets, drink Robitussen, cough guts out, whatever). For example, times I awoke last night (bedtime 1:30am): 2:10, 3:45, 4:28, 5:05, 6:38, 7:13, 8:05, 8:45...I do manage to get back to sleep about 5 minutes after I awake most times, but still...AUUUUGH!
I'm so tired I have been nodding off at inappropriate times. Like yesterday I went to do food shopping. Parked the car and sat there for a second, gathering strength before I went to return 9 million cans, and woke up five minutes later. Today I was sitting at my desk at work, leaned my head back on the back of my chair, had to jolt myself awake (I figure snoring at work is probably a no-no). Sunday I was chatting with mom, she was at her computer and I was on the couch and I dozed off for a few seconds there, too, mid-sentence! I have spent my last couple of weekends napping all day, but I just can't get caught up.
I even had to take a nap on my break at work today. Big thanks to our hideous 24-7 corporate culture for the comfy nap rooms. Slept 30 minutes, woke, slept 25 minutes more. Sigh.
The 4th of July was nice (cookout at P's mom's place), got to see Suzanne's babies again, very cute and already full of personality (couple pix at Flickr). Patrick's family has 9 million children, too, so I made sure I stayed in a corner not infecting anyone. Hopefully that worked! I had a naggy annoying cough all day, probably being outside and near the grill.
I have absolutely nothing else to report. I am getting nothing at all done. I am slogging through some fiction, watching a little baseball, and basically trying to stay sane. Everyone's being super-solicitous, especially at work, so that's very nice. Thanks! I just wish I could stop needing it...
