cold comfort

If you're a fan of the Patriots who is having trouble dealing with yesterday's loss, here's something I heard on the radio today that might help:

A Pats fan was in Vegas at the beginning of this season, drunk out of his mind, and he placed a $500 bet on the Patriots having a perfect season. Odds something like 13,000 to 1. So on Saturday, Vegas calls this guy, wanting to buy him out of the bet for $2.4M. That's million. The guy says "what would I get if they win?" and it's something like $6.5M. So he says no thanks, I'll take my chances.

There, don't you feel better?

Only suckers give up the sure thing for a chance, even if the chance is 2:1.

Totally. Sure, he technically only lost $500, his initial investment. But damn, if I missed out on that deal I'd be chucking myself off the Tobin. And imagine if he's married? His wife's got some serious leverage now. "Which of us decided not to take two million dollars cash in hand? Was it me? No. No it wasn't. So who is more likely to be right, here?"
