tired, so so very tired

Busy week. Because of our outrageous oil bills this year, the landlord arranged to have an energy audit, which is awesome but of course meant that I needed to clean the whole house. I spent three days scrubbing floors, cleaning the bathroom, the kitchen, my room, the hallway, and I gotta say it looks pretty damned good right now. We left Mom's room and the office alone; closed the doors and didn't let them in there. But otherwise the house is presentable. I've mentioned that I live with a semi-hoarder, yes? Dear god, what a lot of work.

Yesterday I headed into the city for a market survey. $75 for two hours of my time, plus free parking. Not bad. Made even better when they were overbooked and sent me and two other women home with pay and without having to participate. Very nice.

Today was the energy audit, so I was up early to quickly sweep and mop floors again (they just get filthy all the time! I have no idea why. Old damned house), then get to my periodontist appointment. He was quite pleased with my progress, told me many times that I've done great work and reduced all my pockets by a lot, but he still recommends removing my wisdom teeth. Sigh! He also wants to do a tiny amount of gum surgery. So we scheduled that for next month, o joy.

Came home, the auditors came in. An interesting process. They look in the stove! In the refrigerator! They drill holes in the walls! They run the tap on hot and stick a thermometer in there. They bring compact fluorescents with them and install them for you. They have you crank the thermostat and then do something infrared-y to see where heat loss is happening, and on and on! Quite elaborate. I have no idea what they did in the rest of the house. I'm sure the basement and attic were quite interesting. If they find stuff (they did) my landlord qualifies for grant money to get some stuff done to make the house more energy efficient. Living in Massachusetts has its uses. I guess I'll find out what the end result is soon. My guess is that they'll blow insulation into the walls, at the bare minimum.

After they finally left I tried to nap, but I am not a good napper so I failed. I did rest, however, because P and I had tickets to the House of Blues to see Gotye in concert, so around 5:45 I headed out to meet P and then we drove into Boston. With my new more mobile self we were able to park in a fairly cheap garage and walk over to Lansdowne Street, where we got some dinner in an Irish pub and then headed into the club for the show. I not only walked all the way everywhere over there, but I also stood (and sorta shuffle-danced as one does) for both sets (I sat down for about 20 minutes in between sets)...so that was 2.5 hours. This time last year? Never happen. I might have made it for an hour. Maybe.

Pictures from the show. Not any good, just phone pix!

One other awesome thing also happened (well, I don't know what prompted it exactly, but I am choosing to read it as awesome): the guy checking my ID for my armband looked at my license, looked at me, and said "Is that really your license?" I was thrown and said, yeah, who else would it be? And the guy laughed, and Patrick said, well, that WAS 80 pounds ago...and later I thought, well, maybe he was reading my age and didn't believe that! So either way, I'm taking it as a plus. Yes, I know he could have thought "the age on the license makes her 47 but she looks 60!" or just "she used to have longer hair" but I choose to take it the other way. Because it costs me nothing to do so, and it makes me happy.

Tomorrow I am driving to the Happy Valley to see Thomas Dolby at the Iron Horse. I'm going with Suzanne, and I'm planning on eating at Bub's BBQ for at least one meal, and I'm hoping to see the corpse flower which is supposedly in bloom at the butterfly place. So it should be pretty fun, also. My mini-vacation after my hard labor of this week. Going to stay overnight, even, so that's also exciting. A departure from routine!
